ALFRED, NY— After Josh Jordan scored the game's opening basket to give the Houghton Highlanders the lead, the Alfred Saxons owned the next 13 minutes, peeling off a 29-2 run to propel them to their 10^th victory of the season, 89-53.
 
Over the remainder of the first half the Saxons would score only one more point than the Highlanders, 16-15, but the damage had already been done.  Alfred led Houghton at the break, 43-17.  
 
While the second half proved more competitive, the Saxons continued to expand their lead, outscoring the Highlanders, 46-36, over the game's final 20 minutes.

>> Alfred won both the battle of turnovers, 18-9, and rebounds, 38-23.  The Highlanders 23 rebounds are their fewest of the season.
 
>> The Saxons sank 24-of-33 shots from the foul line, while Houghton converted 6-of-9 from the charity stripe, thanks in large part to a lopsided personal foul differential of 27-13. 
 
>> Jajuan Preaster came off the bench to lead the Highlanders with 11 points on 5-of-9 shooting.
 
>> Marshall Brewster and Elliot Bowen scored 14 points apiece for the Saxons, while Cole Eells added 13 points and Mike Schmidt 10 points and eight assists.
 
UP NEXT
The Highlanders travel to Elmira College on Saturday to take on the Soaring Eagles at 7:30 p.m.  Houghton has won each of the last three matchups between the two schools, including their most recent matchup, a 59-57 victory at the Nielsen Center on March 16, 2021.
