WASHINGTON, PA – The Washington & Jefferson defense stymied a Houghton Highlanders attack that had scored 16 goals in their previous two games, blanking the Highlanders, 4-0, and snapping Houghton's two-game win-streak.
The President's got on the board early, scoring the would-be game-winning goal in the fourth minute of play, when Lina Crowley scored the first of her two goals on a W & J corner.
Houghton scrapped throughout the remainder of the first quarter as they tried to even the score. The Highlanders outshot the Presidents, 4-2, in the second, but could not find the back of the cage. Then with just over five minutes to play before the half the Presidents struck again on another corner, again scored by Crowley and assisted by Madeline Hubbard.
Washington & Jefferson added insurance goals in both the third and fourth quarters as their defense locked down, holding the Highlanders without a shot over the final 30 minutes.
