ALFRED, N.Y. -- Sophomore
Mikayla Simons scored a career-high five goals, including the game-tying and game-winning goals in Houghton women's lacrosse's 10-9 overtime victory over Alfred University on Wednesday.
This contest was a back and forth affair all night. Simons tallied first with her second goal of the season just 3:27 into the game before Saxon forward Brenna Turner evened the score just 57 seconds later with the first of her nine goals. Turner would be a thorn in the side of the Highlanders all night, answering every Houghton threat.
The score was knotted at four at the half, but Simons tallied two quick goals to put Houghton up 6-4. Turner would strike again with three-straight goals over a six-minute span to give the Saxons a one goal lead.
Rylee Archambault helped the Highlanders edge back ahead (8-7) with back to back goals before Turner scored twice more to give the Saxons a 9-8 lead with 3:33 left.
Simons provided the final daggers for the visitors, scoring the game-tying goal with 15 seconds left and then netting the winner just 1:37 into the extra session.
