HOUGHTON, N.Y. – Houghton softball started strong against visiting St. John Fisher College, losing a heartbreaker, 3-2, in the opening game before succumbing, 10-1, in the second game on Tuesday.
Game 1: St. John Fisher 3, Houghton 2
Game one started just how the Highlanders wanted. They shut down the Cardinals in the top of the first before scoring twice in the bottom half to take a 2-0 lead.
Hannah Haskell took advantage of an error by the centerfielder on a long fly ball and advanced to third. After
Caitlyn Cybart popped up to first,
Grace Thompson came to the plate and sent the ball over the fence in left center for her second homerun in two days.
The game would remain scoreless until the top of the fifth when the Cardinals would plate a runner to pull within a run.
The score was still 2-1 in favor of the Highlanders in the top of the seventh, but the Cardinals proved why they are one of the top teams in the country. An error, a sac bunt and single put runners in scoring position for Megan Kreger, who laced a double into center, driving in what would prove to be the winning runs. Houghton went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the seventh.
