Highlanders Struggle Offensively to Nationally Ranked Cardinals

ALFRED, N.Y. – The Houghton College softball team dropped a pair of conference games against #13 St. John Fisher College on a Friday night bout, April 23.

Game 1: Houghton 0, St. John Fisher 9

The Highlanders were outhit by the Cardinals, 12-4, including a three-run homer in the bottom of the third. While Houghton struggled to string together an offense run, it had a productive top of the fourth that left two Highlanders stranded in scoring position. The Highlanders ultimately fell 9-0 in five innings.

Game 1 Notes:
  • Only four Highlanders produced a hit with Caitlyn Cybart leading the way with a 2-for-2 performance at the plate.
  • On the mound, Kayla Loomis and Anna Frerichs split time with Loomis being tagged with the loss (3-13). Despite giving up eight runs, seven of which were earned, Loomis struck out two Cardinals through 2.2 innings of work.

Game 2: Houghton 1, St. John Fisher 5

Houghton was able to muster a few more hits in the second game, but was still outhit by the Cardinals, 11-6. St John Fisher opened strong with a home run to left center before adding its four other runs through the fifth. Houghton was able to get on the board with a single to center off the bat of Grace Thompson, scoring C. Cybart.

Game 2 Notes:
  • With her single, Thompson tallied her 16th RBI on the season, a team best
  • The Highlanders struggled against Cardinal pitcher Jess Patterson with 11 strike outs.
  • A pair of Highlanders took first as Elise Swanson and Kristin Keller were hit by a pitch.
  • Loomis earned the starting nod, giving up 11 hits to go along with her season high five strike outs.

The Highlanders return right back into action when they welcome the Golden Flyers of Nazareth College in Empire 8 play Saturday, April 24.
