Highlanders Split with Elmira in a Monday Night Showdown

HOUGHTON, N.Y. – The Houghton College softball team earned a two-game split in a conference bout with Elmira College, winning the opener, 4-0, before dropping a 5-3 decision.
 
Game 1: Houghton 4, Elmira 0

Houghton tallied a pair of runs in the first inning with Jennifer Page and Hannah Haskell each scoring. The Highlanders kept the momentum going in the third when Haskell notched her second run of the night with a center field error. Grace Thompson smacked her first homer of the night in the fifth to finalize Houghton's 4-0 win.
 
Game 1 Notes:
  • Haskell had a perfect night at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a pair of runs and an RBI.
  • Caitlyn Cybart had a pair of hits while Thompson and Elise Swanson both put together a hit
  • Kayla Loomis saw seven innings of work on the mound, giving up just three hits while striking out five.
Game 2: Houghton 3, Elmira 5
 
Houghton built a two run lead through the first two innings, but Elmira would close the gap with a score in the third. The Highlanders answered right back with a home run off the bat of Thompson. That would be the end of the Houghton's scoring as Elmira tallied three runs through the fourth and fifth to hand the Highlanders the loss.
 
Game 2 Notes:
  • At the plate, the Highlanders were outhit by the Soaring Eagles, 8-5
  • Thompson notched her third home run for the season
  • Six different Highlanders produced a hit in the loss
  • Loomis and Anna Frerichs split the work in the circle with Loomis being handed the loss. Loomis gave up four hits and runs, three of which were earned, while striking out one.
The Highlanders return right back into action when they welcome St. John Fisher in Empire 8 play Tuesday, April 20.
