KEUKA PARK, N.Y. – Houghton softball earned a two-game split with Keuka College, losing the opener 5-3 before rebounding with a 7-6 win.
Game 1: Keuka 5, Houghton 3
Keuka scored one in the bottom of the first before the Highlanders put three across the plate in the top of the third. Houghton produced four hits and a stolen base in the inning with
Hannah Haskell picking up a RBI single and
Grace Thompson driving home two with a double to center. That's all the visitors would get. Keuka would score one in the bottom of the third and tack on three more in the fifth.
Game 1 Notes
- Thompson finished 2 for 3 with two RBI, a double and a triple
- Haskell, Hannah Chorey and Lydia Thompson each had singles
- Haskell and Peterson each stole one base
- On the mound, Kayla Loomis went the distance, scattering seven hits and allowing five runs, walking two and striking out three
Game 2: Houghton 1, Alfred 3
In the nightcap, it was Houghton that jumped out to the early lead, scoring two runs in the top of the first. Haskell led the game off with a single, stole second, and scored on an error at first after
Hannah Cybart put a ball in play. Cybart advanced to second on the same error, moved to third on a wild pitch, and then scored on an error by the shortstop.
The top of the third produced three more runs for the Highlanders to extend the lead to 5-0. After another leadoff hit by Haskell, Cybart once again took advantage of fielding and pitching errors to get on base and eventually score. Haskell had a chance at the plate but was thrown out at home. Two walks and an error allowed the Highlanders to put two more runs across.
The momentum gained in the top half of the inning was lost in the bottom of the third as Keuka scored four runs on four hits, capped by a 3-run triple. Loomis came on in relief of starter
Anna Frerichs to retire the last two batters.
The Wolves tied the scored at 5 in the bottom of the fifth, but Houghton bounced back with two runs in the top of the sixth to go up 7-5. Chorey led off with a single, and a
Hannah Cybart double, followed by a single by Thompson scored the two runs.
Keuka got a double and a sac fly in the bottom of the sixth to pull to 7-6, but that's as close as they would get. Each team went down 1-2-3 in the seventh inning.
Game 2 Notes
- Houghton scored 7 runs on just 6 hits, taking advantage of 5 Keuka errors
- Haskell finished 2 for 4 with a run scored and one stolen base
- Hannah Cybart was 1 for 3 with 3 runs scored, a double and 1 RBI
- Frerichs went 2.1 innings, allowing 4 runs on 5 hits, striking out 2 and walking 1
- Loomis got the win in relied, allowing 2 runs on 5 hits, with a strike out and a walk
The Highlanders return home for a 5 / 7 p.m. doubleheader vs. Elmira on Monday, April 19.
