ROCHESTER, N.Y. – With a 10-inning win in the first game, the Houghton College softball team split a Tuesday-night doubleheader with Nazareth College. The Highlanders move to 2-10 overall and 1-3 in Empire 8 play.
Game 1: Houghton 3, Nazareth 2
A sacrifice fly in the third inning put Nazareth up by one, but a homer off the bat of
Grace Thompson in the fourth evened it back up. It was a back and forth game through seven, forcing the extra innings.
In the 10
th, with the international tie break enforced and
Hannah Cybart on second,
Caitlyn Cybart reach on a third base throwing error to first which allowed H. Cybart to come home with the go-ahead run while C. Cybart proceeded to advance to second. After back-to-back fly outs, C. Cybart would cross home plate after
Alisabeth Crandall produced a single to right field giving Houghton a two-run lead, 3-1.
Nazareth was able to score its runner placed on second, but back-to-back fly outs and a ground out to second gave Houghton the win, 3-2.
Game 1 Notes
- At the plate, four Highlanders tallied a multi-hit day while two more produced a hit.
- Baserunning, both Hannah Haskell and H. Cybart swiped a base from the Golden Flyers.
- Kayla Loomis earned the starting nod for Houghton, going all 10 innings. Despite giving up eight hits and one earned run, Loomis picked up her first win of the season.
Game 2: Houghton 0, Nazareth 8
Houghton dropped the second game, 8-0, in five innings. Nazareth put up six runs in the third before tacking on two more in the fourth a fifth. At the plate, Houghton struggled to connect as it only tallied a season-low three hits.
Game 2 Notes
- C. Cybart produced her sixth double of the year as she went 1-for-2 at the plate.
- On the mound, Anna Frerichs and Loomis split the time with Frerichs being sacked with the loss. In 2.2 innings of work, Frerichs gave up six runs, four of which were earned, while striking out one. In at relief, Loomis also struck out one while giving up three hits.
The Highlanders are back on the road for an Empire 8 matchup with Alfred University Wednesday, April 14. First pitch is slated for 5 p.m.
