Highlanders Drop a Pair to Sage

HOUGHTON, N.Y. – The Houghton College softball team dropped a pair of conference games against Sage College Saturday, April 10. The Highlanders move to 1-7 for the season while Sage moves to 4-0.   
 
Game 1: Houghton 6, Sage 8
 
After dropping to an early 5-0 deficit, the Highlanders began chipping away in the second when Alisabeth Crandall's single scored Grace Thompson. Sage would go on to notch another in the fourth before Houghton put up two  in both the fifth and seventh to even the game, forcing extra innings. Miscues on the defensive end allowed the go ahead score for the Gators before they tacked on an insurance run with a ground out to third.
 
Game 1 Notes:
  • Elise Swanson led the way at the plate, producing three hits and a run to go along with her three RBIs.
  • Also have a multi-hit day was Hannah Chorey who went 2-for-3 with a pair of runs and a walk.
  • A total of eight Highlanders saw action at the plate with at least one hit, while four were able to come across the plate.
  • The Highlanders continue to struggle to optimize on potential scoring opportunities, leaving a game-high eight on base.
  • Through eight innings of work, Kayla Loomis was ultimately sacked with the loss as she gave up seven hits and eight runs, while striking out four.
 
Game 2: Houghton 2, Sage 6
 
Houghton opened up the board with a sacrifice fly off the bat of Caitlyn Cybart, scoring Jen page. It would not be until the third when a wild pitch put Houghton up by two. Sage cut the deficit to just one with a fourth inning run before overtaking the Highlanders with three runs in the fifth and one in the sixth.  
 
Game 2 Notes:
  • In addition to her run, Page put together a pair of hits in four appearances at bat.
  • Swanson, Crandall, and Kristen Keller each tallied a hit, while Hannah Cybart walked twice.
  • H. Cybart and Swanson swiped a base in the first and third, respectively.
 
The Highlanders return back into action for a Sunday afternoon doubleheader, April 11 at Alfred University. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
