Houghton College women's tennis team fell to the St. John Fisher Cardinals Saturday morning 9-0. Despite the score line, Houghton was competitive in several matches.

To start the morning in doubles action, both pairs at 1st and 2nd doubles fought hard in tight matches. At one doubles, Erin Haley and Elise Swanson battled to the end in a 8-6 defeat, and at the second spot, Maddi Soth and Chloe Esch fell 8-3 but had several games that went to a deciding deuce point.

In singles play, Junior Erin Haley played a solid match but came up short at the second position in a close 8-6 match. Elise Swanson, Chloe Esch, and Maddi Soth all finished the day with 8-3 defeats at 1st, 3rd, and 4th singles respectively.

"I think we battled our nerves more than anything today," Head Coach Tonya McGraner said about the match. "We had some really close matches and some opportunities that we weren't able to convert on, but it is a good learning experience. The girls will have to shake it off quickly because we play again in a few hours."

The Highlanders will look to recoup quickly as they take on the Sage Gators at 5pm later today.
