Houghton Drops Opener to RIT

Take Victories at 1st Doubles & 2nd Singles

Houghton College men's tennis opened up their season with a tough loss against a gritty RIT team Friday afternoon. Ethan Yung led the Highlanders going undefeated in both his singles and doubles matches.

To start off the day in doubles action, the number one team of Jake Fisler and Ethan Yung squeezed out a great comeback from 4-7 down to win 8-7 (7-4) in the tiebreak. The Highlanders went into the singles play down 2-1 but with energy on their side after the comeback victory on court one.

In singles, Matthew Cicero and Micah Christensen battled hard at the third and fourth spots respectfully, falling 6-2, 6-2 and 6-3, 6-1. Ethan Yung finished the night on a high note for the Highlanders, coming out on top in a thriller match at second singles edging his opponent 6-1, 7-6 (11-9) in a tense tiebreaker after being down 2-5 in the set.

"We had some really good matches today" Head Coach Tonya McGraner explained. "Big wins at 1st doubles and 2nd singles, but overall a really good effort from the guys. They have certainly been working hard this past year to get back out on the court. We are extremely proud of the effort they brought here tonight."

Houghton will gear up to take on another tough opponent in Ithaca College on Wednesday at 4pm.
