Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer Starts Season with 1-0 Win over Elmira

HOUGHTON, N.Y. – Houghton men's soccer took to the field for the first time in more than 400 days and made the most of it, earning a 1-0 victory over Elmira College on Burke Field.

The Highlanders controlled most of the play, but couldn't break through the packed-in defense presented by the Soaring Eagles in the first half. Houghton came out with more energy after the intermission and put the Soaring Eagles under pressure. The team was rewarded in the 84th minute when Nicholas D'Angelo served up a corner to the head of Oscar Palacios. The freshman sent his shot toward the Elmira keeper, but the ball bounced off a defender to Ewing who calmly put the ball into the back of the net.

COACH'S CORNER
It was great to finally see the guys play after so long without competitive soccer.Tonight was a good challenge and I thought Elmira were organized and tough to break down. We had a lot of the ball but struggled in the first half to create any chances. I thought we did much better in the second half and found a way to win. -- Heach Coach Bobby McColl
