UTICA, NY – On Saturday afternoon the Utica Pioneers showed why they have score more goals per game than any team in the Empire 8 conference, as they defeated the visiting Houghton Highlanders, 8-2.
The Pioneers opened the scoring in the fifth minute when Empire 8 leading scorer Sabina Whitehouse deposited her 13
th goal of the season into the back of the Houghton cage.
Houghton responded a little less than 15 minutes later when Rebekah Davie collected the rebound off a shot by
Jace Hunzinger and beat the Utica keeper to tie the game.
Utica responded with two more goals before the end of the half and added two more early in the second half to take a commanding, 5-1, lead.
In the 44
th minute, Houghton got back on the board when
Sara Carter found
Cedar Smith off a corner insert to cut the Utica lead to three, 5-2.
The Pioneers, however, would allow the Highlanders to come no closer, and would, in fact, add three more goals before the day was through.
