ALFRED, NY— Cori Beck scored a career-high 17 points, while four of her teammates reached double-digit point totals, as the Houghton Highlanders won their second straight Empire 8 matchup, defeating the rival Alfred Saxons, 70-52.
The Highlanders opened the game on a blistering note, scoring the game's first 14 points and finishing off the first quarter up 17-3.
Alfred found their footing in the second, outpacing the Highlanders, 18-16, cutting the Houghton lead to 12-points at the half.
The two teams maintained the difference throughout the third, playing to a 14-14 draw.
In the opening minute of the final quarter it looked like the Saxons would finally make a run, as Gillian Flint hit a jumper and Ana Ion nailed a three to cut the Houghton lead to seven points.
After
Hannah Cybart answered with a three of her own, Flint hit another jumper pulling Alfred back within eight. But a 7-0 run over the by the next three minutes proved to be the nail in the Saxons coffin, giving the Highlanders a 17-point lead and enough cushion to finish out the game.
