The Women's Tennis team lost their home match against SUNY Cortland 2-7 on Friday evening. Unexpected weather interrupted the match and resulted in relocation to the Kerr-Pegula Field House during doubles. Both first and second doubles had to resume play after the switch. The Highlanders lost all three doubles, with second doubles putting up the closest score of 4-8.
"We knew moving into singles was going to be tough. And because there was another match immediately following we fed on the courts as soon as possible, so we didn't get to do our traditional huddle between doubles and singles. You could feel the frustration from the girls. It's hard to come back after a 0-3 start." Says Head Coach
Tonya McGraner
The Highlanders were able to pull out two singles wins.
Elise Swanson (No. 2 singles) continued her flawless singles career with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Cortland's Isabella Arrigo.
Alicia Cline at No. 5 singles tacked on a decided victory with a 6-0, 6-2 win to round out the match.
Coach McGraner commented: "I'm proud of the girls, you could tell it just wasn't quite there for us today, but everybody still fought. Elise and Alicia both played great matches against good players. They both had to strategize and play aggressive, they did a really great job. Elise was mentally rock-solid on court today, and it really showed in her results. Alicia was the last match on, so every single girls was sitting beside her court cheering, and that has the potential to be a really nervy situation. She handled it like a champ and let it fuel her game and her energy. Really good work from both of them."
The Highlanders will be back in action on Thursday against Fredonia at Home. Play begins at 4pm.
