Men's Tennis Closes Season with Loss in E8 Final

PITTSFORD, N.Y. -- Houghton men's tennis wrapped up its 2019 season with a 5-0 loss to Stevens Institute of Technology in the championship match of the Empire 8 Tournament on Saturday in Rochester.

The second-seeded Ducks took each of the doubles matches (8-2, 8-1 and 8-1) and then won the two singles matches they needed to clinch the win. Louis-Guillaume Garcia fell 6-0, 6-1 in first singles, while Dylan Scherer lost in fourth singles. 6-3, 6-1. Zach Shilvock and Jake Fisler were playing strong in the second and third singles matches, respectively, but neither were able to finish. Shilvock lost 6-0 in his first set but was leading 4-2 in the second. Fisler lost 7-6 in set one and was leading 1-0 in the second.

"Of course we all wish we'd have been able to walk away with the 'W' today. But the guys had an excellent season and it's really a testament to all their hard work and dedication to make it this far," said Head Coach Tonya McGraner. "It's been a great year, and as a team they have shown consistent improvement throughout the duration of Houghton tennis program, so I'm excited to see what the future holds for these guys."

Houghton, who earned the No. 1 seed in the tournament after going 7-0 in the E8 during the regular season, finished with a record of 11-5 overall.
