ALFRED, NY -- Softball takes two from the Pioneers of Alfred State today as they traveled to Alfred, NY for a non-conference match up. Houghton would only allow Alfred State one run in each game and eight hits total on the day.

Game 1
Houghton 3, Alfred State 1
The beginning of game 1 started in a close match up with Alfred State, leaving both teams scoreless until the fifth inning.
Haley Unverdorben would ground out to shortstop, allowing
McKenzie Marti to score, giving the Highlanders their first run of the game. With bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth for Alfred State, Brittany Fisher would walk and allow teammate Brianna Dittman to score, giving Alfred the ability to tie the game up at 1-1. A big sixth inning would give the Highlanders the advantage, putting up two more runs, pulling away from the Pioneers. In the sixth inning with runners in position,
Caitlyn Cybart was able to hit a single, scoring
Taylor Sile and
Kaylee Jentsch afterwords would also hit a single that would allow
Andrea Taboni to score, giving Houghton the lead for the win.

- Kaylee Jenstch got it done on the mound and in the batters box for Houghton. As she gets the win on the mound while also leading the team in hitting, going 3 for 2 in game 1
- Haley Unverdorben, Kaylee Jenstch and Caitlyn Cybart each produced one RBI

Game 2
Houghton 9, Alfred State 1
Another close matchup for Houghton until a fifth inning break away would ultimately result in a Highlander win. This time Alfred State would be the first team to put a run on the board in the bottom of the second inning. Houghton would come back with an answer as
Andrea Taboni singled to left center, allowing teammate
Taylor Sile to score.
Barbara Richert would single on the right side of the field in order to score
Katie Jones, giving Houghton the lead in the game. The Pioneers would remain scoreless throughout the game and Houghton would come through with a huge fifth inning, producing 7 runs to give them the go ahead win, run ruling Alfred State in the fifth inning. Some great hits and costly errors by pitcher Jordan Leonard would ultimately allow Houghton to pull away in the fifth inning, resulting in a sweep for the day.
