Bombers Take Down Highlanders in Series Opener

HOUGHTON, NY—The Ithaca Bombers scored three runs in the first inning, then continued to put up more throughout the game, defeating the Houghton Highlanders, 9-1.

Ithaca scored in six of the nine innings, consistently chiseling away at the Highlanders pitching, but the three run first would be all the scoring the Bombers would need.

Tyler Hill picked up his sixth win of the season for Ithaca, allowing only five hits and one walk over eight innings while striking out five.

Houghton picked up their lone run in the sixth when Wayne Rode ripped his third double in two days over the right fielder's head, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a single through the left side by Caleb Philips.

Ben Closson immediately followed with a double into the left field corner, placing runners on second and third, but a diving catch by the Ithaca left fielder on a Joe Gross liner ended the Houghton threat.

COACH'S CORNER:
"Ithaca is a solid team.  They are incredibly well coached and play the game the right way.

"Our guys worked hard.  We got behind the eight-ball early and Ithaca just kept tacking on one-to-two runs at a time.

"We hit some balls hard, but most of them went right to someone.  We turned some double-plays, which helped, but it just wasn't enough.

"Their pitcher [Tyler Hill] threw a really good game.  He kept us off balance and pounded the strike zone.

"We get another shot at them on Saturday.  We'll come ready to work." – Coach Brian Reitnour

 UP NEXT:
The Highlanders will take off Good Friday before returning to the Kerr-Pegula Athletic Complex at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday for a doubleheader with Ithaca.
