Softball Can't Get Past Stevens

HOBOKEN, N.J. -- A mid-week trip to New Jersey didn't turn out well for Houghton softball as the Highlanders dropped two games to the Stevens Ducks on Tuesday.

Stevens took the first game, 2-1 in 9 innings and then won game two, 5-1.

Game 1
Stevens 2, Houghton 1

Houghton got on the board first thanks to an RBI single by Mariah Rogers. Hannah Haskell had reached on a single, advanced to third on a wild pitch and moved to third on a single by Taylor Sile. The Ducks evened the score at one during the bottom half of the inning. Neither team could put any runs across over the next seven innings. Houghton had a strong pitching performance by Kaylee Jentsch. who went the distance. But Stevens was able to break through in the bottom of the ninth to get the walk-off win.

Game 1 Notes Game 2
Stevens 5, Houghton 1

The Ducks did most of their damage in the first two innings, putting four runs across on starting pitcher Taylor Sile. Stevens added another run in the bottom of the sixth before the Highlanders broke up the shutout bid with a run in the top of the seventh.

Houghton was stymied by the pitching performance of Marissa Capello, who gave up just three hits, while striking out 13 Houghton batters.

Game 2 Notes
  • Lauren Couturier, McKenzie Marti and Barb Richert had the only three Houghton hits
  • Couturier and Sile each had a stolen base
  • Sile pitched six innings, allowing five runs on 10 hits
