Highlanders Fall in Two Close Games

CLERMONT, Fla. -- Despite their most productive day on the base paths, Houghton softball was unable to secure a win Friday, losing 9-7 to New England College and 6-4 to John Carroll University.

Game 1
New England 9, Houghton 7


Houghton fell behind 2-0 in the first and was able to pull within a run in the second, but New England scored four times in the top of the third to go up 6-1. The lead grew to 8-2 in the fourth after two more New England runs, before the Highlanders exploded for five runs in the bottom of the fifth.

That inning featured seven hits by the Highlanders, all singles. Houghton just missed out on another run when Hannah Haskell was thrown out at home trying to score from second on a Taylor Sile single.

New England stretched the lead to 9-7 in the top of the sixth and Houghton could manage just a single hit in their final seven at bats.

Game 1 Notes
  • Caitlyn Cybart had a strong outing at the plate, going 3 for 4 with a run scored.
  • Hannah Haskell and Barbara Richert each had two hits with a run scored
  • Kaylee Jentsch had a hit and scored two runs.
  • Jentsch got the loss on the mound, going 3.2 innings, allowing eight runs on nine hits
  • Hannah Cybart pitched 3.1 innings of relief, allowing one run on five hits

John Carroll 6, Houghton 4


Houghton found themselves in the lead early in this one with two runs scored in the top of the first. It didn't take long, as Lauren Couturier singled, stole second and scored on an RBI double by Hannah Haskell.

Two more runs by the Highlanders in the top of third upped the lead to 4-0. Houghton produced three hits and stole a base and took advantage of a John Carroll error and wild pitch. 

John Carroll scored three times in the bottom of the fourth to pull within a run. Houghton had a chance for more runs in the top of the sixth, After Katie Jones singled, Kaylee Jentsch stroked a double into the outfield. Jones tried to reach home but was thrown out at the plate. John Carroll added another three runs in the bottom of the sixth to claim the win.

Game 2 Notes
  • Jones, Couturier and Haskell each produced two hits, with Couturier and Haskell each scoring twice and stealing a base.
  • Haskell, Sile and Caitlyn Cybart drove in a run apiece
  • Hannah Cybart started on the mound, allowing two runs on three hits over three innings of work
  • Sile picked up the loss in relief, allowing four runs on eight hits of 2.2 innings.

Houghton finishes its Florida trip with two more games Saturday, taking on UMass-Boston at 9:30 a.m., and closing with Wheaton (Ill.) at 11:45 a.m.
