CLERMONT, Fla. -- Houghton softball is returning north after suffering two setbacks Saturday. The Highlanders opened the day with a 7-2 loss to UMass-Boston and finished the day with a 3-2 loss to Wheaton (Ill.).
Game 1
UMass-Boston 7, Houghton 2
UMass-Boston jumped ahead 2-0 in the top of the first, but Houghton responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the opening frame. Houghton's score came off a solo homer by
Taylor Sile.
The Beacons added two runs in the second and another three in the third before the Highlanders would get their other run in the bottom of the third off a
Caitlyn Cybart double that scored Sile.
The teams went scoreless over the final four innings.

Wheaton 3, Houghton 2
Houghton and Wheaton produced a competitive contest as the Highlander wrapped up their Florida trip. After the Thunder got on the board in the bottom of the first, Houghton responded in the top of the second.
Kaylee Jentsch grounded out to second to bring home
Barbara Richert, who had reached on a walk, stole second and advanced to third on a ground out.
Wheaton tacked on two more runs in the top of the fourth to take a 3-1 lead. An inning later, Houghton got back to back singles by
Katie Jones and
Mariah Rogers, and after a stolen base, a ground out by
Andrea Taboni scored Jones from third. Unfortunately, the Highlanders were unable to get the tying run, as two ground outs ended the inning.
Game 2 Notes
- The Highlanders picked up five hits in the contest, led by a 2 for 3 showing from Rogers
- Jentsch and Taboni each drove in a run
- Jentsch pitched six innings, allowing 3 runs on 7 hits, with two strikeouts and two walks
