Softball Falls Twice on Thursday

CLERMONT, Fla. -- Houghton softball battled hard in two contests Thursday, but registered 6-1 and 7-5 losses to York and Alverno, respectively.

Game 1
York (Pa.) 6, Houghton 1

The first game of the day saw Houghton get out to a 1-0 first inning lead, but that's all they would score in the contest. York tied the score in the third and added three runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth to claim the 6-1 win.

The lone Highlander run came after Hannah Haskell reached on a single, advanced to second on a fielder's choice and took third on a passed ball. Taylor Sile drove Haskell home with a single to the left of the infield.

Game 1 Notes
  • Lauren Couturier was 2 for 3 from the plate and also reached base on a walk and finished with two stolen bases
  • Sile and Haskell each had singles
  • Barbara Richert, Sile and Haley Unverdorben each had stolen bases
  • Kaylee Jentsch started on the mound, going four innings while giving up six runs on eight hits with no strikeouts and no walks
  • Hannah Cybart came on in relief, allowing three hits and no runs while striking out one in two innings of work
Game 2
Alverno 7, Houghton 5

The Highlanders scored twice in the bottom of the first to go up 2-0 early. Couturier led off with a walk and moved to second on a single by Haskell. After back to back strikeouts, Caitlyn Cybart walked to load the bases, and Katie Jones promptly doubled to bring home Haskell and Couturier.

Houghton got two more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Haskell reached on a walk with two outs before Richert singled to move Haskell to third. A wild pitch brought Haskell home with Houghton's third run and moved Richert to second. Sile then brought home Richert on an RBI double.

The joy of the four-run lead didn't last, as Alverno brought home six runs in the top of the fifth, capitalizing on five hits and a Houghton error. The Highlanders were able to come back to within a run when Couturier walked, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a Richert groundout.

Game 2 Notes
  • Couturier didn't get a hit, but scored twice, thanks to reaching on two walks. She also stole a base.
  • Haskell, Richert, Sile, Jones and Jentsch each had a hit. Haskell also scored twice, walked three times and had two stolen bases
  • Jones finished with two RBI, with Sile and Richert also driving in runs
  • Hannah Cybart picked up the loss, She allowed four runs on six hits, walking two and striking out three in four innings of work
  • Sile pitched the final three innings, allowing three runs on six hits, walking one and striking out three
Coach's Corner
Alverno and York are both solid programs so we couldn't afford some of the defensive miscues that happened. Our offensive output picked up in the second game which was a big positive, and we were able to get on the board first which has been a goal of ours this week. Overall, we are growing and getting better every day as a team, and we are excited to get back on the field tomorrow. -- Head Coach Katie Sinclair

Next Game
Houghton plays two more on Friday, taking on New England at 1:30 p.m. and John Carroll at 3:45 p.m.
