Softball Splits Two Games in Clermont

CLERMONT, Fla. -- Houghton softball got its first win of the 2019 season Tuesday in Clermont, Fla. After opening the day with an 11-1 loss to Trine, the Highlanders bounced back with an 8-2 victory over Rosemont.

The Thunder belted out 16 hits in the contest, scoring 8 runs over the first three innings. The Highlanders were able to put one across in the fourth on a hit by Taylor Sile that drove in Hannah Haskell. Trine scored three more times in the top of the seventh.

Hannah Cybart started on the mound, giving up five runs on eight hits in two innings of work. Sile came on in relief, going five innings and giving up six runs on eight hits.

The Highlanders produced their best offensive game of the season in game 2 to pick up the 8-2 win.

Houghton scored five times in the first two innings to take control. In the top of the first, Taylor Sile and Caitlyn Cybart each had RBI doubles to stake Houghton to a 2-0 lead. The next inning, Barbara Richert singled home Hannah Cybart, and Sile followed with another double that brought home Richert and Hannah Haskell. Rosemont pulled a run back in the bottom of the third, before Sile pushed the margin back to 5 runs with an RBI single in the top of the fourth. The Highlanders added another run in the fifth and sixth innings to close the scoring.

  • The Highlanders finished with 13 hits
  • Sile had a monster game at the plate, finishing 4-for-4 with two doubles, four RBI and two runs scored
  • Haskell and Richert each finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBi
  • Couturier was 2-for-3, while Hannah Cybart scored twice
  • Kaylee Jentsch went the distance on the mound, giving up two runs on seven hits over seven innings, while striking out two and walking two
Next Game
Houghton gets a day off Wednesday before returning to the diamond for two more contests Thursday. They take on York at 9 a.m. and Alverno at 11:15 a.m.
