UTICA, NY – The Houghton Highlanders closed out the 2019 season on Saturday, falling to the Utica Pioneers, 4-1.
With the win, the Pioneers clinched the number-two seed in the Empire 8 conference tournament, which begins on Friday, November 8.
Houghton opened the game with a quick run at the Pioneers net, creating an early opportunity for Caitlin Jennings, but the junior midfielder's shot sailed wide. The Pioneers would create three shots of their own late in the quarter, but all three also went wide.
Less than two minutes into the second quarter, Utica netted the first goal of the game. The Pioneers continued to pepper the Houghton cage throughout the remainder of the quarter, but goalie Sarah Olandt and the Highlander defense remained solid before heading into the half trailing by one.
In the third, Utica opened up scoring, putting two more goals on the board before capping their scoring in the final quarter to take a 4-0 lead.
Less than two minutes later, Caitlin Jennings took a pass from Sydney Jameson and beat the keeper to put Houghton on the board. That, however, would be all that the Highlanders could muster as the Pioneers defense held for the remainder of the game.
