Women's Tennis Closes Season with E8 Semifinal Loss

PITTSFORD, N.Y. -- Houghton women's tennis finished their 2019 fall season with a 5-0 loss to top-seeded St. John Fisher College in the Empire 8 Semifinals on Friday.

The Cardinals swept doubles play, then got wins in first and second singles to close the match and advance to Saturday's championship.

The first doubles tandem of Catie Moore and Elise Swanson, who went undefeated during conference regular season play, lost 8-5 in their match. Swanson also fell in first singles (0-6, 0-6) and Erin Haley lost in second singles (3-6, 2-6). The rest of the singles matches went unfinished. Moore lost her first set in third singles, 2-6, but had bounced back in the second set and was even at 3-3. Alicia Cline won her opening set 7-5 and was trailing 0-2 in the second when the match was called.

"We had a great end of season. Fisher is a tough team, so congrats to them on getting to the finals tomorrow, and a huge thank you to all the fans who came out to support us in Rochester today," said Head Coach Tonya McGraner, "All in all I think we should be very proud of the way we played the last two weeks of the season. Getting to the tournament was a huge success for us, and a great cap off to the fall season."

Houghton ended their fall with a record of 5-9.
