HOUGHTON, NY – A four-goal second quarter lifted the St. John Fisher Cardinals past the Houghton Highlanders field hockey team on Monday night, 6-1.
After the Highlanders opened the game with a pair of scoring opportunities in the first minute of action, the Cardinals pressed into the Houghton defensive third, breaking the scoreless tie just over six minutes when Bre Socker found the back of the cage.
The Cardinals broke the scoring open in the second, putting four goals on the board to take a 5-0 lead into the half.
Just over five minutes into the fourth quarter the Highlanders'
Hannah Daniels cracked a long cross from just outside the circle and
Hannah Greidanus redirected the ball past the Fisher goalie.
The Cardinals, however, answered eight minutes later as Socker took a ball just past the midfield line and finished a 40 yard sprint with a backhanded shot past the Houghton goalie.
