ALFRED, N.Y. – Houghton women's basketball lost in conference play against the Saxons of Alfred University, 61-64, on Saturday afternoon.
Leading the way for a strong start to the first quarter,
Brooke Lewandowski put Houghton's first 9 points on the board, contributing to a lead the Highlanders were able to hold until the last minute-and-a-half. It was during these waning moments of the quarter that a pair of jump shots and 3 pointer at the buzzer would allow the Saxons to take the lead. The Highlanders would trail behind the Saxons during the second quarter and would come within 2 points of Alfred University. However, with a 3 point buzzer beater leading into half-time, the Saxons would lead by 7 points (27-34).
Coming back to the court, the gap between the Highlanders and Saxons would grow to as many as 13 points during the third quarter. In the fourth quarter the Highlanders would go on to close the gap and tie the Saxons twice during the final 4 minutes of the game. However, despite outscoring Alfred University 22-13, the Highlanders would be unable to pull ahead and the Saxons would take their second conference win of the season.
