HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- The Highlanders took on Elmira College on a chilly afternoon at Burke Field today. Elmira got out of the gates fast with an early 5-2 lead after the 1st quarter.
Houghton and Elmira each scored a goal early in the second quarter to make the score 6-3, before Elmira found the net again to extend their lead to 7-3. The Highlanders came charging back ending the quarter on a 3-0 run including a thrilling fast break when
Cole Chapman hit
Jonathan Mayer for a goal with just 20 seconds left in the half. Elmira led 7-6 at the half.
The 3rd quarter was back-and-forth with some good action. Each team unloaded some high octane cross-checks to heat things up, while the 3rd quarter score was 1-1, making it 8-7 in favor of Elmira heading into the 4th.
The 4th quarter was an exciting one to say the least. Houghton would tie the game 8-8 on a goal by
Michael Wrobel. Elmira answered right back to reclaim the lead 9-8.
Cole Chapman would tie it back up at 9-9 with 4:58 to play on a beautiful assist from
Michael Wrobel. The Soaring Eagles would answer right back again with 3:20 to play to regain a 1 goal advantage. Another Chapman goal would knot things up again at 10-10 with 2:05 to play. Once again Elmira answered to take the lead back with 56 ticks on the clock. The Highlanders came up with a big stop when
Silas Philbrick caused a crucial turnover to get possession back for Houghto with 35 seconds to go. Coach Lundeen called a timeout with 31 seconds left to set up the game tying try, but the Highlanders couldn't find the net.
Elmira took home the win, 11-10.
