Houghton Softball Splits Weekend Series with Elmira

HOUGHTON, NY—  The Highlanders split Saturday series with Empire 8 competition, Elmira Soaring Eagles, dropping game one 8-4 before taking the finale 3-2 in walk-off fashion.

Game 1: The Highlanders, who have not been strangers to late game rallies, scored all four runs in the last three innings of the game.
 
In the bottom of the fifth, Taylor Sile ripped a monster double to drive in Caitlyn Cybart who, two at-bats before, singled to right-field. Sile and Cybart both had a powerful showing in the box, going 3-for-4. Barbara Richert added to the board in the sixth by crossing the plate on an error, while in the bottom of the seventh Meghan Armstrong doubled down the left-field line collecting two RBIs.
 
Game 2: Although Houghton took the board first in the third inning, another late-game rally was in order for the 3-2 exhilarating win over Elmira.
 
The seventh inning proved to be critical for both teams. Elmira responded quickly grabbing their first lead of the game, 2-1, in the top of the seventh.
 
Trailing in the bottom of the seventh, Houghton found themselves with bases loaded. Armstrong, up next at-bat, singled to second for an RBI. With the score tied 2-2 and bases loaded once again, Kaylee Jentsch cracked off a walk-off single up the middle.  
 
KEY STATS:
>> Elmira outhit Houghton by one hit, 12-11, in one. Game two the hit count was 8-4, Houghton.
 
>> Houghton collect a combined five RBIs between both games.
 
>> In game one, McKenzie Marti, Mariah RogersJentsch, and Armstrong go 1-for-4. Game two saw Lauren Couturier go 1-for-3.
