CLERMONT, F.L.— Houghton softball burned in 8-1 loss against Alverno Inferno in game one on Thursday day evening. In the nightcap, Cabrini stole for home in the bottom of the ninth to steal a win from the Highlanders, 6-5.
Game one showed two early runs and multiple RBIs in the top of the fifth inning that powered Alverno past the Highlanders. Alverno allowed Houghton one run on eight hits with two walks and nine strike outs.
With runners on second and third with two outs,
Mariah Rogers singled to the right field driving in the Highlanders' lonesome run in the bottom of the fifth.
In game two, the Highlanders were edged out by the Cavaliers in an exhilarating nine-inning game.
Houghton started at bat not finding in any luck, while the Cavaliers doubled on a fly which drove in two for an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
The Highlanders got on the board on a ground ball single in the top of the third. Cabrini later answered Houghton in the same inning with three more across the plate and extend their lead by four.
A late rally fueled by
Kaylee Jentsch and
Rogers, 5-5, warranted extra innings to help keep the Highlanders stay alive. However, the game was decided in the bottom of the ninth as the Cavaliers walked twice and scored on a steal from third.
