PITTSFORD, N.Y.- In women's hoops
, fourth-seeded Highlanders fell, 62-46, to top-seeded St. John Fisher in a historic appearance to Empire 8 conference tournament on Friday night.
The Cardinals came out swinging in the first half outscoring the Highlanders 33-17. The first quarter started out slow with both teams fighting for the lead. Towards the end of the first quarter, St. John Fisher caught hold of multiple positive possessions allowing an advantage over Houghton,12-7.
Positive possessions for the Cardinals continued in the second quarter as the Highlanders' deficit grew to as much as 18 points by the 1:33 minute mark. The Highlanders struggled to find the basket as the Cardinals' defense only allowed Houghton two points during the first seven minutes of the quarter. The Highlanders were able to finish the half, 33-17.
While the third quarter was dominated by the Cardinals, the Highlanders continued to fight through a tough shooting night in the fourth quarter. With 3:16 minutes left in the game, Houghton trailed the Cardinals 58-43, which was aided by a couple of jumpers from
Emily Swanson and a three-pointer from
Amber Edwards. However, St. John Fisher's lead proved to be out of reach for the Highlanders in 62-46 defeat.
