HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- Though they didn't get the decision they wanted, Houghton men's tennis produced several quality performances in a 6-3 loss to Roberts Wesleyan in their spring opener Friday at the Kerr-Pegula Field House.
The Highlanders had great showings in first and second doubles to start the day, with the tandem of
Louis-Guillaume Garcia and
Jake Fisler taking an 8-4 win in second with
Jordan Crouch and
Zach Shilvock playing strong but just missing out on a win (6-8) in first doubles.
Crouch bounced back to get a 6-3, 6-2 win in second singles, and
Dylan Scherer earned his first collegiate win (6-3, 6-4) in fifth singles.
Shilvock took his first singles opponent to a first set tie break before losing the match 7-6 (7-4), 6-3.
"This was a good first match for our guys. It was a real test to see where we are and what we need to work on moving forward," said Coach
Matthew Webb. "We had real strong performances tonight at both 1
st and 2
nd doubles with Crouch and Shilvock nearly stealing it at 1
st doubles. Fisler and Garcia played great today at 2
nd doubles in a convincing match.  Crouch was outstanding at 2
nd singles. Across the board, I am pleased with the guys. We played toe to toe with a good Roberts squad tonight. The way we played in our first match of the spring bodes well for where we can be at the end of the season. I am very proud of our team."
The Highlanders have a few weeks off before they return to host RIT on Wednesday, March 7 at 4 p.m.
