HOUGHTON, NY – Despite committing their third-fewest attack errors of the season, the Houghton Highlanders fell, 3-0, to a strong-hitting SUNY Geneseo team on Tuesday night.
To open the match, the Knights reeled off four different runs of four points or more, taking the first set, 25-16.
Trailing, 6-11, in the second set,
Ally Bittinger slammed home a kill and
Amber Edwards served up three straight aces to pull the Highlanders within a point. The Knights, however, would answer with seven straight points, in route to a 25-19 win to go up by two games.
Houghton continued to battle, scrapping back from an early deficit to tie the game, 15-15. The Knights answered with nine of the next 10 points, forcing match point. The Highlanders refused to quit, as three straight kills by
Brooke Lewandowski gave the Highlanders some momentum.
With their backs to the wall, Houghton picked up three more points to draw within two, 22-24, before the Knights finally put away a kill to finish the match.
