Houghton women's lacrosse took on Elmira College Saturday for senior day at Burke Field, and it was a senior who came through in heroic fashion.
Chandler Jones scored the game-tying goal with 5.7 seconds left in regulation and got the game-winner just 1:02 into overtime as the Highlanders took the 10-9 win.
Both of Jones's goals came with the Highlanders playing a man-down.
Elmira got on the board first at the 27:40 mark to take a 1-0 lead, but Houghton struck right back with a goal from
Meghan Oswald assisted by
Chandler Jones.
Elmira scored again before Kelsie Ashley added a free position goal to tie the game at 2-2. Elmira would answer right back to take the lead back before Jenny Zacchigna scored 2 goals in a row to give the Highlanders a 4-3 advantage on the scoreboard.
Again the Soaring Eagles would answer back to tie the game at 4-4.
Zacchigna had back to back goals again to take a 6-4 lead into halftime. Both goals were off of
Chandler Jones assists.
Shot attempts were notched at 12-12 in the first half.
Elmira scored the first four goals of second half to take the lead 8-6, then Zacchigna found the net twice in a row yet again for the Highlanders to tie the score, 8-8.
The Soaring Eagles stuck one with 1:39 to go to take the lead 9-8.
Jones had a highlight reel coast-to-coast goal to tie the game at nine as the clock clicked down, sending the game into OT.
Jones stole the show once again with a free position sudden death goal in OT to win the game 10-9.
Zacchigna, who scored six goals on the afternoon, closed the season with 81 goals and finished her career with 197 tallies. Jones finished the year with a career-high 58 assists and ended her career with 179 helpers, which is also a program record.
The Highlanders end the season 5-10 overall, and 2-6 in the Empire 8.
Thanks to our seniors for their many contributions to the women's lacrosse program, and the Houghton College community.
