HOUGHTON, NY—In a scene that looked eerily familiar to yesterday, the Houghton Highlanders (8-22, 1-11 Empire 8) lost the first game of a doubleheader to the Nazareth Golden Flyers (15-11, 8-6 Empire 8) then battled back in the second game, only to come up short, 6-4.
 
Trailing 6-1 after five innings, the Highlanders put up a zero in the top half of the inning then scored two runs on a Barbara Richert single and an Alicia Foss sacrifice fly.  With two on and only one out Houghton threatened to close the gap even more, but two consecutive strikeouts allowed the Golden Flyers to escape without further damage.
 
After Kaylee Jentsch put another zero on the scoreboard in the top of the seventh, the Highlanders went back to work on the offensive side with only three outs left.
 
Bailey Shattell ripped a one-out single and Jenny Young doubled, placing runners at second and third.  Shattell scored on a two-out error, leaving runners on first and third, but another strikeout finished the rally and the game.
 
Shattell, Jentsch and Taylor Sile each finished with two hits apiece for the Highlanders.
 
Next Time Out:
Houghton will make up a previous rainout with Hilbert College on Monday at 5:00 p.m. at the Kerr-Pegula Athletic Complex.
