Cardinals Spoil Senior Day with Sweep

HOUGHTON, NY—The St. John Fisher Cardinals (22-6, 9-0 Empire 8) utilized a few innings of offensive explosiveness to sweep the Houghton Highlanders (12-20, 2-13 Empire 8) on Senior Day at the Kerr-Pegula Athletic Complex.

The Cardinals scored seven runs in their final at bat to blow open the first game, 14-3, then scored 13 runs in the final three at bats to do the same in the second, winning 17-7.

Game One:
With Fisher leading 7-0 after four innings, the Highlanders finally got on the scoreboard in the fifth when Nicholas Melchiore grounded out to score Tanner Hoffman.

The Highlanders began to threaten in the sixth, scoring two on a single to right-center by Hoffman then loading the bases with two outs.  The Cardinals, however, worked out of the jam, striking out a Houghton pinch hitter to end the rally.

Things unraveled for the Highlanders in the top of the seventh as St. John Fisher scored seven runs to open up the game.

Tage Johnson went 2-for-2 with two walks, and Hoffman finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI.

Game Two:
Houghton jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first.  Johnson singled home David Wessells and Bryan Hodge singled home Johnson.  It looked as though the Highlanders would open things further in the inning, but a baserunning miscue limited kept the damage minimized.

Fisher scratched back a run in the second, then tied the game at two in the third with a one-out single to left.

The Cardinals took the lead in the fourth, 3-2, on a two-out single to right field then added another run in the fifth with another two-out RBI.

In the bottom of the fifth, Ethan Duryea ripped a two-out triple to right field, scoring Melchiore to bring the Highlanders within one.

After a scoreless sixth for both teams, the Cardinals put up six runs in the seventh and three more in the eighth.

Houghton rallied in the eighth, scoring four runs to make the score 13-7, but Fisher answered quickly with four more runs in the top of the ninth, putting the game out of reach.

Wessells finished the game 3-for4 with a walk, a run, an RBI and three stolen bases.  Duryea also went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

Next Time Out:
Houghton travels to Canton, NY on Friday to take on the SUNY Canton Roos in their final conference series of the year.  First pitch is slated for 4:00 p.m.
