Softball Battles Back, Falls in Extra-Inning Walk-Off

ALFRED, NY—After losing game one, 1-13, to the Alfred University Saxons (16-14, 7-5 Empire 8), the Houghton Highlanders (8-20, 1-9 Empire 8) battled to a 9-9 tie after seven innings in the second game before losing on a one-out walk-off double in the eighth.

Game One:
The Saxons jumped out to an early 10-0 lead after two innings, scoring seven in the first and three in the second thanks to six hits and five Houghton errors.

Houghton scored their lone run in the third after Taylor Sile singled and Jenny Young's double brought her home.

Game Two:
The Highlanders quickly put the first game behind them, scoring five runs in their first two frames, capped by a bases-clearing double by Young.

Alfred, however, would not go quietly, scoring one in the bottom of the second and five in the bottom of the third to take a 6-5 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth, Alfred continued their offensive attack with a leadoff homerun and four more hits to plate an additional two runs.

With the Saxons now leading 9-5, Barbara Richert hit a two-on, two-out double to the gap in the top of the fifth to cut the lead to 9-7.

The Highlanders then tied the score in the top of the sixth when Sile doubled home Kelly Parmeter, and Young brought in Sile with a single.

Both teams stranded a runner in the seventh and the score remained tied at nine.

Houghton again stranded a runner in the top of the eighth.

The Saxons led off the bottom half of the inning with a single.  After a sacrifice moved the runner to second, a double brought home the winning run.

McKenzie Marti, Sile, Young and Richert each collected two hits apiece for the Highlanders.  Young added four RBI and Sile scored four times.

Next Time Out:
Houghton returns home tomorrow to face the Nazareth College Golden Flyers in another Empire 8 Conference doubleheader.  First pitch is slated for 3:00 p.m.
