Hatton No-Hits Roos: Highlanders Earn Split

CANTON, NY—Exactly one week after Kaylee Jentsch tossed the first no-hitter in Houghton Highlander (8-18) softball history, fellow sophomore Tanya Hatton matched the feat.

After falling in game one of the doubleheader to the SUNY Canton Roos (8-7) in a 5-4 walk-off, Hatton did not allow a single hit and walked only three batters while striking out nine, to post the first no-hitter of her collegiate career in a 10-0 victory.

Game One:
With the game knotted at four in the bottom of the seventh the Highlanders walked three straight batters to load the bases.  The team made a pitching change but the result of the fourth batter of the inning remained the same: four balls and a free base pushed home the winning run for the Roos.

The two teams traded runs in each of the first three innings, after which Canton held a slim 4-3 lead.

Then in the top of the fifth Taylor Sile ripped a two-out single to left center and promptly stole second base.  Jentsch then drove home the tying run with a double to left center.

Jentsch, who struck out three batters over six innings, retired six of the next seven batters she faced before finally tiring in the seventh.

At the plate, Jentsch finished 3-for-4 with two doubles.  McKenzie Marti also added two hits for the Highlanders.

Game Two:
Hatton received all the help she would need in the top of the first inning, as Houghton pushed across three runs, capped by Barbara Richert's single to right to score Alishia Foss.

Houghton would tack on single runs in the third and fourth then add two in the fifth when Bailey Shattell hit an RBI-single and Jentsch drew a bases-loaded walk.

The Highlanders then capped their scoring in the sixth when Shattell struck again; this time with a two-RBI double, scoring Richert and Justine Phillips.

Shattell finished the game 3-for-4 with three RBI, three stolen bases and two runs scored.  Jentsch and Richert each added two hits and two RBI apiece.

Next Time Out:
After more than a week on the road, the Highlanders finally return home on Thursday, April 20 for a non-conference doubleheader with the Hilbert Hawks.  First pitch is slated for 5:00 p.m.
