UTICA, N.Y.—The Houghton Highlanders (10-11, 2-5 Empire 8) took a 6-3 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning then watched the Utica Pioneers (7-8, 1-2 Empire 8) explode for six runs to take the lead.
Houghton rallied in the seventh; plating one run and loading the bases, but the Pioneers worked their way out of the jam to earn the victory.
Victor Cavalieri took a no-hitter into the fifth inning before giving up two hits and three runs. He finished his day with six strikeouts in five innings of work.
The Highlanders grabbed a two-run lead in the third after
Taylor Huntsman singled through the left side, scoring
John Zamites, and
Tage Johnson hit a long fly ball to center to score
David Wessells.
Huntsman picked up another RBI in the fifth, scoring Wessells from second base to give the Highlanders a 3-0 lead.
After Utica tied the score on Cavalieri in the bottom half of the inning, Houghton pulled ahead in the top of the sixth, scoring three more runs and highlighted by a long double to centerfield by
John Zamites.
Zamites and Huntsman each finished with two hits.
Bryan Hodge went 3-for-4 at the plate, as well.
Game Two: Suspended in the top of the 10
th inning, tied 15-15. Game to be resumed at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
