Highlanders Let Early Lead Slip Away in Loss to Wells

HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- Houghton men's lacrosse jumped on the Wells Express from the opening faceoff and raced to a 5-0 lead, but the visitors recovered to turn the tables and grabbed the 16-11 win over the Highlanders on Tuesday at Burke Field.

It was the usual dose of the Chapman brothers that propelled the Highlanders early. Paul Chapman scored three times and Cole Chapman scored twice as Houghton went up 5-0 just nine minutes into the contest. But the Highlanders would go scoreless over the next 35 minutes while giving up 14-straight goals to the Express.

Down 14-5 early in the fourth quarter, Houghton mounted a comeback. Freshman Quinn Hull scored his first of the year just one minute into the quarter, and after another goal from Wells, Paul Chapman scored three more times and Ryan Palmer added his second of the year to make it 15-10 with 4:51 left. The Express would score once more before Cole Chapman finished the scoring with his third of the game with 2:36 to go.

Paul finished with six goals and an assist. Cole added three goals, while Christian Bigham had two assists. The Chapmans each had 11 shots to tie for team honors. Nathan Moore was 19-for-29 in the faceoff circle with a team-high 10 ground balls.

Jorge Medina made 11 stops in net.

Shots were 51-48 in favor of the Express, while the Highlanders had a slight edge (37-36) in ground balls. Houghton cleared just 11 of 18 attempts and finished with 20 turnovers.

Houghton (0-4) returns to action when they host NCAA DIII #4 Ithaca College on Saturday, March 11 at 1 p.m.
