HOUGHTON, N.Y. – With a 20-6 rally in the fourth quarter, the Highlanders outlast the Golden Tornadoes, 56-45, in women's basketball action on Tuesday night.
In a fast-paced game, the Highlanders (4-3) and Golden Tornadoes (2-5) battled in what seemed like an even match-up. Houghton started out strong commanding an early 14-11 edge over Geneva. Geneva fought hard, winning the second quarter and leaving the half with a three-point lead, 24-21.
Geneva held onto the lead well into the third quarter, leading by as much five points at the 1:58 mark and still led by three after the third. The fourth quarter was primetime for the Highlanders. The Highlanders tied the game with a three just one minute into the final quarter and took the lead for good with under six minutes to play. They found their sweet spot shooting 62.5% from the field (5-for-8) in the fourth while holding Geneva to 15%.
Hannah Cybart, a freshman forward, was the game's leading scorer with 10 points.
Leslie Moose and
Madison Detwiler each chipped in eight points on the night. On the boards, senior
Laurie Call pulled down seven rebounds, while
Detwiler collected six.
Alexis Gates led the Golden Tornadoes notching 13 points in 24 minutes, while her teammate, Jodie Carlson, chipped in 12 points.
