The Houghton College field hockey team started their 2016 campaign with a tough 3-2 overtime loss to Oswego State on Friday afternoon. The loss puts the Highlanders at 0-1 on the season and the Lakers at 1-0.
The Highlanders held a 2-1 lead for the majority of the contest thanks to goals from Katelyn Cook and Kelsie Ashley, but the last 30 seconds is where the Lakers would make their comeback. After Oswego was awarded a penalty corner -- and with just 1.2 seconds left on the clock -- Grace Rinaldi would score her second goal of the game off of a pass from Monica Harvey to even the score at two. The game would then head to overtime where Katie Reynolds would score on a pass from Jordan Sheehy to seal the 3-2 win for the Lakers.
The Highlanders started off the scoring 4:19 into the game when Cook deflected a pass from Ashley into the goal to stake Houghotn to a 1-0 lead. Later in the period the Lakers responded with a goal of their own. Then in the second period the Highlanders would take back the lead with an unassisted goal from Ashley to give them a 2-1 advantage. However, the Highlanders would see the lead slip away at the end of the period.
"An OT loss wasn't the way I envisioned starting our season, but there are a lot of positive outcomes from our first game to build on moving forward," said second-year coach Hannah Ogden. "Kelsie Ashley had a strong start and set the tone for a great senior season with an assist in the first goal and a great shot in the second. Ashley Hughes and Marissa Hollinger played a phenomenal defensive game today despite some tough calls that never seemed to go their way. We are creating more offensive and scoring oppertunities than we ever have in the past. Forwards Tanya Hatton, Katelyn Cook, and Nicole Jennings are working well together. We need to take care of the little things before hitting the field this Saturday- composure on the ball, clock management, and defensive positioning as a whole."
Elizabeth Piszker finished the game with 11 saves but would take the loss moving her to 0-1 on the season.
The Lakers outshot the Highlanders 19-8 and also had the advantage in penalty corners 11-7.
The Highlanders are back in action on Saturday, September 3 when they host Wells College at 12:00 p.m. on Burke Field.
