Women's Lacrosse Caps Season with 14-10 E8 Win over Hartwick

ONEONTA, N.Y. -- Sophomore Torri Sperl tied a program-record with seven goals as Houghton women's lacrosse finished the 2016 season with a 14-10 win over Hartwick College on Saturday.

It took most of the first half before Houghton was able to get control.

The Hawks jumped ahead 3-1 early in the first half, but Houghton got goals from Chandler Jones, Jennifer Zacchigna and Meghan Oswald to give the Highlanders a 4-3 lead. After two more Hartwick goals, Sperl scored twice and Zacchigna added her second of the day to give the Highlanders a lead they would not relinquish.

Hartwick scored another goal near the end of the first half, but Sperl ended the half with her fourth of the game to give the guests an 8-6 lead at the half. Sperl opened the second half with another goal, and followed another goal from Oswald with two more scores, before Zacchigna finished the run to give Houghton a 13-6 lead.

Hartwick made things interesting with four-straight goals as time ticked away in the second half, but Oswald finished the scoring with 25 seconds left.

Hartwick had the advantage in most statistical categories, including shots (32-31), groundballs (24-19), clears (17 for 20) and turnovers (14 to 21). However, Houghton's advantage in draw controls (18 to 8) was important to the Houghton's control of play.

In addition to her three goals, Zacchigna finished with seven draw controls and four groundballs.

Sperl's seven goals tied Zacchigna's mark which she achieved twice earlier this season.

Jones finished with eight assists on the afternoon.

Kourtnie Franklin had 13 saves in her final career game.

Houghton finishes the season with a 5-11 record overall and a 2-6 mark in E8 play.
