HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- Houghton's seniors went out firing on all cylinders, but came up short in a 19-12 loss to SUNY Canton at Burke Field on Saturday.
After the Highlanders fell behind 8-2 early in the second quarter, it looked like it was going to be a long day. But Houghton scored four-straight with goals from Ryan Palmer, Bryce Bellan, Paul Chapman and Josh Bailey to pull within 8-6.
The Roos scored twice in the final minutes of the second quarter to push their lead back to four, and continued that momentum in the third quarter as they outscored the Highlanders 5-0.
Even though they now trailed 15-6, the Highlanders were not going down without a fight. They outscored the visitors 6-4 in the final quarter and continued to impress the home crowd with their toughness and resilience.
Leading the attack for Houghton was Josh Bailey, who finished with three goals and three assists and Paul Chapman, who finished with three goals and two assists. Cole Chapman added three goals, four groundballs and an assist on the afternoon. Justin Hatch scored the other Houghton goal.
Nathan Moore led the team with 10 groundballs.
Chris Bucciarelli had 14 saves in net and also picked up an assist on a long outlet pass on Hatch's goal.
Shots were even at 46 apiece and the Roos had a slight 48-45 edge in groundballs. Faceoffs were in the favor of the Roos, 19-14.
Houghton finished the season with a record of 3-13.
