ROCHESTER, NY—St. John Fisher's bats continued to prove why they are one of the top offensive teams in the country as they pounded out 30 hits over Wednesday's doubleheader, sweeping both games over the Houghton Highlanders by scores of 17-1 and 11-2.
Game 1: The Cardinals scored four runs in the first three innings then exploded for 13 runs in the fourth and fifth. As if the Fisher offense needed additional help, the Cardinal hitters took advantage of 10 Highlander walks and several dropped fly balls.
Jim Dawson improved to 7-0 on the hill, allowing only three hits and two walks while pitching all seven innings.
Taylor Huntsman (Niagara Falls, NY, Niagara Falls) went 2-for-3 for Houghton and scored the team's only run in the first game.
Game 2: Down 3-0 after four, the Highlanders scratched across their first run when an infield single by
John Zamites (Olean, NY, Olean) brought home Huntsman.
Fisher tacked on two more in the bottom half of the inning, but Houghton rallied again in the sixth.
Patrick Parsons (Wellsboro, PA, Wellsboro) singled through the left side and
Michael Knapp (Brockport, NY, Brockport) doubled down the third base line, putting runners on second and third with nobody out. The Highlanders, however, would manage only one run, when Parsons came home on a groundout by
Garret Kirkpatrick (York, PA, Central York).
The Cardinals stretched their lead to 6-2 in the sixth, where things stayed until the bottom of the eighth when Fisher again pounded out a big inning, scoring five runs and pushing the game out of reach.
The Highalnders return home on Friday to take on Stevens Institute of Technology in their final conference series of the year. Game time is set for 6:00 p.m.
