Homeruns Push Roos Past Highlanders in Game Three

HOUGHTON, NY – The SUNY Canton Roos utilized two homeruns and an outstanding pitching performance by junior Robbie Osterer to defeat the Houghton Highlanders, 7-2, and complete the three-game sweep.

After a lead-off single in the first, Canton first baseman Seth Douglas launched a long homerun to left field to put the Roos up 2-0.

Houghton responded with one run in the bottom half of the inning after Michael Knapp (Brockport, NY, Brockport) led off with a deep double to left center and later scored on a Tage Johnson (Jamestown, NY, Frewsburg) sacrifice fly.

Canton struck again in the third.  After a two-out walk Chris Roenbeck hit his second homerun in two days to right field, putting the Roos up 4-1.

In the bottom of the third Houghton loaded the bases with no one out and their 2-3-4 batters due at the plate.  But Osterer worked his way out of the jam without allowing a run.

Osterer held the Highlander bats at bay through six, allowing only four hits and three walks while striking out five.

Canton added an insurance run in the fifth and two more in the ninth, both thanks to triples by Wilson Matos.

Houghton plated a second run in the ninth when Ethan Duryea walked and Garret Kirkpatrick tripled to left.

Knapp went 2-for-3 for the Highlanders with a double and two stolen bases.  Johnson also picked up a double on the day.

Victor Cavalieri (Rochester, NY, Northstar Christian) picked up the loss, allowing seven hits and three walks while striking out six batters over six innings.

Houghton is next scheduled to travel to Alfred, NY on Tuesday take on Alfred State Pioneers at 3:30 pm.
