HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- Houghton women's lacrosse scored the final three goals of the game to secure an 8-5 win over Alfred University on Wednesday at Burke Field.

The teams played evenly in the first half as the teams went into the break tied at three. Jennifer Zacchigna (East Aurora, NY, East Aurora ) scored twice and Torri Sperl (Saugerties, NY, Saugerties) added a single tally. The Saxons scored the final two goals of the half after Houghton had jumped ahead 3-1.

The Highlanders were able to regain a two-goal advantage within the first seven minutes of the second half after goals from Zacchigna and Meghan Oswald (Penn Yan, NY, Marcus Whitman), but the Saxons pulled even with two scores of their own at the midway point of the half.

Still tied at five with 11:44 to go, Oswald scored her second of the night to give Houghton the lead for good. Zacchigna scored her fourth at the 6:50 mark and Oswald closed the scoring with 3:28 to go.

Chandler Jones (Collegeville, PA, Spring-Ford) picked up four assists on the night. Oswald led the team with four draw controls. Elizabeth Piszker (Glens Mills, PA, Cardinal O'Hara) had a team-high four caused turnovers and three groundballs. Kourtnie Franklin (Belfast, NY, Belfast) had eight stops in net.

The Highlanders finished the game with a 42-17 shots advantage, including a 23-5 edge in the second half. Alfred just edged the Highlanders in groundballs, 13-12.

Houghton (4-8; 1-3 E8) is back in action at noon Saturday, April 16 when they host Utica in another E8 matchup.
