Saxons Take Two from Softball

HOUGHTON, NY—The Houghton Highlanders were held scoreless in both ends of tonight's doubleheader against the Alfred University Saxons, mustering only three hits while falling 7-0 and 8-0.
 
Game 1:
The Saxons scored a pair of unearned runs in the first, taking advantage of a two-out error and a double, then plated three more in the third thanks to a homerun by junior third baseman Liz Thompson.
 
In the sixth AU pushed across two more runs on three hits. 
 
Taylor Sile (Hilton, NY, Hilton ) pitched all seven innings for the Highlanders, giving up four earned runs while walking only one batter and striking out three.
 
Jessica Hayner (Waterford, NY, Shenendehowa ), Jessica Hayner (Waterford, NY, Shenendehowa ) and Alishia Foss (Medina, NY , Medina) collected one hit apiece for Houghton.
 
Game 2:
Saxon sophomore pitcher Shannon Schaefer stole the show, tossing her first collegiate no-hitter.  Schaefer allowed only four baserunners through the run-shortened six inning game: three by walk and the other by error.
 
The Highlanders stumbled in the second inning, allowing six unearned runs, and the Saxons never looked back.
 
Houghton reliever Kaylee Jentsch (Orchard Park, NY, Orchard Park ) held AU scoreless through the next three innings before allowing another pair of unearned runs in the sixth.  In all, Jentsch tossed 4.2 innings of relief, allowing five hits and three unearned runs without walking a batter or collecting a strikeout.
 
The Highlanders return to action on Friday when they travel to Ithaca to take on the Empire 8-leading Bombers at 3:30 p.m.
