Highlanders Fall to Stevens

HOUGHTON, N.Y. – The Stevens Ducks scored 27 points in the third quarter on their way to a 76-48 victory over the Houghton Highlanders.
 
The Ducks spread the ball around as five different players scored in double-digits.
 
Houghton opened a quick lead in the first quarter before Stevens went on a 12-2 run over a four minute period.
 
Stevens stretched their lead to as many as 14 points when Miranda Ripken hit a jumper two minutes into the second quarter. 
 
The Highlanders clawed their way back to within four on a Maisie Pipher (Lowman, NY, Twin Tiers Christian) layup, thanks to a 13-3 run of their own, but the Ducks scored eight of the final nine points of the half to take an 11 point lead into the half.
 
The game opened up in the third as the Ducks pulled away.  Houghton fought hard to the finish, outscoring the Ducks, 16-15,  in the final frame.

The Highlanders:
      >Elle Reed (Sherman, NY, Sherman Central School) sank 10 of 11 free throws, scoring a team-high 15 points.

The Ducks:
      >Kaitlyn Astel posted a team-high 12 points and four other Ducks scored 10 points apiece.
       
Stat Analysis:
      >Stevens shot 50 percent from the field in the second half and knocked down 82 percent of their free throws.  Houghton shot only 26 percent from the floor and 60 percent from the line.
      >The Ducks outscored the Highlanders off turnovers, 21-8.
 
Next Time Out:
Houghton remains at home tomorrow afternoon when they host the Utica College at 4:00 p.m. The Highlanders defeated the Pioneers earlier in the season, 68-62.
