WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- Houghton men's baseball lost 9-1 and 11-0 on Friday to Augustana (Ill.) and dropped 9-3 and 6-2 decisions to St. Mary's (Minn.) on Saturday to close out their Florida trip.
In Friday's games, the Highlanders couldn't muster much offense. Game one saw Houghton jump out to a 1-0 in the top of the first when Tage Johnson drove in Michael Knapp, but that's the only score the team would see on the day. Augustana scored four in the second and five in the fifth to take the win.
Johnson and Bryan Hodge had two hits apiece. John Kopicky went four innnings on the mound, allowing nine runs on seven hits, while striking out five and walking two. Rett Perkins struck out the side in his one inning of work.
Game two featured a one-hitter by Augustana pitcher Zach Morgenstern, who also struck out nine Highlanders and walked none.
Patrick Parsons had the only Highlander hit.
Lucas Cornell went 3 1/3 innings on the mound, allowing eight runs on three hits and six walks. Perkins pitched 1 2/3 with three runs and five walks, while Aaron Burnside finished the final two innings, striking out two and giving up just one hit.
The team finished their trip with two losses to St. Mary's on Saturday.
In game one, the Cardinals scored four runs over the first two innings to take command. The Highlanders scored once in the third on double steal, with Jens Omdal swiping second and Joe Gilligan coming home to make it 4-1. Three more St. Mary's runs over the next two innings gave them a 7-1 cushion. Houghton added runs in the fifth and seventh, while the Cardinals added single tallies in the sixth and seventh for the final 9-3 margin.
Hits were 12-6 in favor of the Cardinals. Gilligan went 3-for-3, including two doubles, with two runs scored. Ned Monthie got the loss on the mound, pitching five innings and allowing seven runs (three earned) on eight hits.
The nightcap went to the Cardinals 6-2. They scored twice in the bottom of the first, added another in the fourth and two more in the fifth to go up 5-0. The Highlanders pulled two back in the top of the sixth. Tage Johnson singled to lead off the inning, reached third on a double by Patrick Parsons and scored on a passed ball. St. Mary's closed the scoring in the bottom of the sixth with one final run.
Robert Schmidt got the start and gave up seven hits and five runs (three earned) over five innings. Sean Brown (1/3) and Garrett Alread (2/3) split the final inning in relief).
The Highlanders wrapped up their Florida trip with a record of 1-7 and return home to face Penn State DuBois in a doubleheader on Saturday, March 12.
